Detailed Eye Test Options

Hi Everyone - its been a while since I have posted anything on the site - but I need some advice. I had an eye test two weeks ago and had to have a stronger prescription. I have also been told that I have some pressure behind one of my eyes and they want to carry out a pressure test and a field test on my eyes.

Has anyone out there had the same problems since being diagnnosed with RA or am I being over precautious. I have had my methotrexate increased and am now experiencing pain in my shoulder and arm - I can sometimes hardly lift up my arm and last night took a duvet down to the settee so as not to disturb my husband - I don't know whether to contact my rheumy nurse and let her know what is happening. I have just returned to work after 4 weeks sick leave feeling absolutely wiped out - I have found it very hard this week and when I had my back to work interview I asked my manager to enquire about flexi retirement on my behalf as I am 61 in a couple of weeks, they have been very supportive

Sorry to be such a moaning minnie but I am feeling up against it at the moment as I have been keeping fairly on top of the situation for the past 15 months. Any advice would be really welcome.

Hi Jane,

My optician carried out the same tests for me at the beginning of the year, I had persistent eye infections and just could not get rid of them. He did the pressure test and various other tests also the one for glaucoma which I DO NOT have, and the one where drops are put in your eyes and you have to shield them from the sun as everything is white. I am on MTX and Hydrox he was just being thorough, yours was too don't worry.

Re your arm you have probably strained it being back at work or it may be a little flare up, both are not pleasant but can be sorted with pain killers. I'm sure it wont last but do see your doctor or nurse if it continues. This is normal and you are not a moaning minnie, we have all been there and it is alarming when something like this happens. You have done brilliant coming to terms with it over the past 15 months this is just another learning curve. You will get there and it will pass. Thinking about you Lorna x Smile

Hello Jane,

You are not moaning any more than me or any one else.

Don't worry too much about your eyes your optic was being very thorough
and thats a great job.

I diagnosed in Nov 2008. I had 2 catarach ops one last year and 1 in June,
good that both eyes done - not sure though if it was the RA that caused.

totally agree with Rose, your optician is being thorough. FYI the start testing for pressures once you hit 40. My first test my optician panicked me and said my pressures were extremely high - it turns out that I do indeed have high pressures but its genetic and I can take the pressures. Its difficult when these little things crop up as it can be quite worrying and wearing. Its natural to be concerned and I dont see it as moaning at all.

also re your arm and shoulder, I agree with Lorna, I am having something similar with my right wrist - it feels like a mixture of strain and RA flare - joints are so weak and tender/swollen. It does get frustrating but I know it will pass soon and I (hope) I will have another period of relative normality.

My advice is give yourself a treat, a massage or go to the pictures and spoil yourself whatever way you can, you deserve it

Thanks for your support - I went to the optician for my appointment yesterday, as you say she was really thorough and explained exactly waht she was doing and why. At the end of the examination she told me that the pressure was not serious but they will keep an eye on me (sorry just realised the pun!!)

As for my arm and wrist - not being at work and on my computer it seems to have eased - I shall see what happens when I go back next week.

Will let you know how it goes.

I haven't been using the online site for a while and I have forgotten how everyone is so supportive of each other - I shall definately be keeping in touch with everyone in the future it really does make you feel that you are not the only one with RA. Thanks once again
